Honoured Dead Memorial in honour of the soldiers who defended the city during the Anglo-Boer War. Built at the insistence of Cecil John Rhodes, the Honoured Dead Memorial is situated on the corner of Dalham and Oliver Roads. Designed by Sir Herbert Baker, it houses the vault that contains the remains of some British soldiers who died during the Siege of Kimberley. “Long Cecil”, the cannon at the base of the memorial, was built to defend the British against Boer artillery fire. The inscription on the memorial was written by Rudyard Kipling. Kimberley. Northern Cape. South Africa.
